Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy recently addressed speculation about potentially joining Rush for their upcoming reunion tour. He shared his thoughts in an interview with Louder Sound.
Portnoy discussed what his response would have been if Rush’s Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson had approached him about filling the drumming position following Neil Peart’s passing.
“If Rush hypothetically ever approached me with it, of course, I would have done it with the utmost respect and honor,” Portnoy said. “But frankly, I’m kind of relieved they didn’t.”
The drummer explained his reasoning. He acknowledged the immense challenge of replacing the legendary Neil Peart.
“First of all, filling Neil’s shoes is going to be impossible,” he continued. “If anybody ever thought Mike Mangini filling my shoes was tough, try filling Neil Peart’s shoes! And I came back home to Dream Theater, which is where I belong.”
Portnoy also noted that the timing would have created complications. This was given his recent return to Dream Theater.
“So if, hypothetically, if they had approached me with this reunion that they’re doing, it would have put me in an incredibly awkward position because of the timing of it all,” he said.
Portnoy’s comments come at a significant time in his career. He recently reunited with Dream Theater after a 13-year absence from the band he co-founded.
Wikipedia reported that Portnoy holds the distinction of being the second-youngest inductee into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame. Neil Peart himself was the youngest. This connection between the two drummers adds weight to Portnoy’s respectful stance regarding the potential Rush opportunity. His credentials in the progressive metal world are well-established. He was a driving force behind Dream Theater’s rise to prominence in the genre.
The drummer’s return to Dream Theater in October 2023 marked the end of an era that saw Mike Mangini behind the kit for over a decade. Metal Injection noted that Portnoy has praised Mangini’s handling of the transition. He credited him for his professionalism throughout the process. The reunion has been met with enthusiasm from longtime fans who witnessed the band’s original lineup reformation.
Portnoy’s respectful approach to the Rush speculation reflects his understanding of the band’s legacy. It also shows his recognition of the sacred nature of Neil Peart’s position within the group. Louder Sound revealed that while he sent condolences to Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson following Peart’s passing, he never offered his services. He recognized that the decision of whether to continue was entirely theirs to make.
The timing of Rush’s announcement and Portnoy’s Dream Theater reunion created what he described as a potentially awkward situation. WIRX reported that Dream Theater shocked the music world in 2025 with their reunion announcement. This set the stage for what many consider one of the most significant comebacks in progressive metal history. This development ultimately resolved any potential conflict for Portnoy. It allowed him to focus entirely on his return to the band where he feels he truly belongs.
