Stryper frontman Michael Sweet recently shared his candid thoughts on Ghost and vocalist Tobias Forge during an interview with The Metal Voice.

Sweet provided an honest assessment of his evolving opinion on the Swedish metal band when asked about his view on Tobias Forge of Ghost as a singer.

“I remember when they first came out and all the hype,” Sweet said. “Everybody was talking about them like ‘Hear these guys.’ This was a few years back, obviously. And I went and listened. And my honest first reaction was, ‘I’m not getting it yet. I don’t understand. What’s the hype?’ They’re good but they’re not blowing me out of the water.”

Sweet acknowledged that his perspective has shifted over time as he listened to more of Ghost’s material.

“And then, as I listened to more stuff and they come out with more stuff in recent years, I get it,” he continued. “They’re very talented. Tobias is very talented, in particular. But it still not the kind of metal that I love. I respect it. I appreciate it. But it’s not something I would want to get in the car and drive two hours to the sea every other month.”

Sweet recognized Ghost’s commercial success and impact on the metal scene despite his personal preferences.

“But obviously, they made noise and they’ve proven their point,” he said. “It doesn’t matter what Michael Sweet says about them. Because they’re doing incredibly well. So they’re doing something right.”

Sweet’s comments reflect the broader conversation about Ghost’s unique position in modern metal. The band has built its reputation through both musical talent and theatrical presentation.

Wikipedia documented that Ghost is primarily the brainchild of Tobias Forge, who formed the band in 2006 and has remained its constant lead vocalist and creative force ever since. The band operates as a unique project where Forge serves as the central figure, adopting various personas such as “Papa Emeritus” on stage. He hires musicians who often change over time.

Louder Sound revealed that Tobias Forge had an extensive history in the Swedish metal scene before establishing Ghost. He played in several bands spanning genres from death metal to glam. This diverse musical background brought a wealth of experience that now shapes Ghost’s distinctive sound and theatrical image.

The band’s unconventional approach has proven successful in building a strong following despite mixed reactions from some metal veterans. That Music Mag highlighted that Ghost’s unique style combines heavy metal with theatrical elements. This creates a distinctive identity that sets them apart from traditional metal acts.

This theatrical and musical combination helps explain why Ghost has generated such polarizing opinions within the metal community. Some embrace their innovative approach while others, like Sweet, remain more reserved in their appreciation despite acknowledging the band’s undeniable success.
