Stryper frontman Michael Sweet recently shared his thoughts on winning a poll for “Top Hair Metal Frontman of All Time” against Mötley Crüe’s Vince Neil. He expressed his surprise at the results in a statement posted on Facebook.

Sweet addressed both his unexpected victory in the poll and the recognition of his guitar playing abilities.

“There was a recent poll between me and Vince Neil [to pick the Top Hair Metal Frontman of All Time]. I was surprised to see so many people voting for me,” Sweet said. “Shocked actually.”

The musician expressed even greater surprise at fans acknowledging his guitar skills.

“But what was even more shocking is many people actually knew that I played guitar,” he continued. “That kind of blew my mind. For 41 years I’ve heard so many say ‘we don’t know you played guitar’ or ‘we had no idea you played as much as you do.’ Every show, every week, every month, every year. Not sure why but it’s true.”

Sweet emphasized his deep connection to the instrument and gratitude for the recognition.

“I’ve always played and guitar has always been my main instrument. My passion. My joy,” he said. “It’s heart warming (and I mean that with all my heart) to see people acknowledge my playing. Much more so than my singing. Thank you.”

Sweet’s surprise at the recognition reflects his long journey as both a vocalist and guitarist in the Christian metal scene. He has been a pioneering figure for over four decades.

Mabumbe reported that Michael Sweet co-founded Stryper in the early 1980s. He blended heavy metal with Christian themes to challenge the negative stereotypes of the genre. The band emerged during a time when heavy metal was often associated with dark imagery and anti-religious sentiment. This made their approach revolutionary within the music industry.

The band’s breakthrough came with their third album, *To Hell with the Devil* (1986), which went platinum and included hits like “Honestly” and “Calling on You.” Michael Sweet’s official biography noted that this album helped them gain mainstream attention. It established them as one of the most successful Christian metal bands of all time.

Beyond his work with Stryper, Sweet has maintained an active solo career and explored other musical ventures. Single Matters documented that he released his self-titled solo debut in 1994, which sold over 250,000 copies. This demonstrated his appeal as an individual artist separate from the band.

Sweet also served as the lead vocalist and guitarist for the legendary rock band Boston from 2007 to 2011. This further showcased his versatility as a musician. This experience with one of rock’s most iconic bands likely contributed to his development as both a guitarist and performer. It added to the 41 years of musical experience he referenced in his recent statement.
