Mark Gallagher, guitarist of Raven, has shared surprising details about Metallica’s early vocal plans in a recent interview with Guitar World.

“I don’t know. They were a little fractured at the time, saying, ‘We need to get a good singer,'” Gallagher recalled. “That was the whole thing. We were like, ‘What’s the matter with James Hetfield? He’s doing pretty good.”

“They said, ‘That’s just temporary,'” he continued. “I think they were looking at John Bush to be the singer.”

This revelation illuminates an obscure chapter in Metallica’s history. The band had considered replacing James Hetfield with John Bush, who later gained recognition through his work with Armored Saint and Anthrax.

Reports from Far Out Magazine indicate this consideration emerged after the release of Metallica’s debut album ‘Kill ‘Em All.’ Hetfield was questioning his vocal abilities during this period.

This potential change aligned with a pivotal moment in Metallica’s evolution. Hetfield was working to establish himself as the band’s frontman. The group simultaneously dealt with various lineup changes and discussions about their musical direction.

John Bush had already established himself with Armored Saint at the time. His powerful vocal style and growing reputation in the metal scene made him a compelling candidate for Metallica during their period of uncertainty.

Hetfield ultimately remained with the band and developed his signature vocal style. Data from Ultimate Classic Rock shows that while Metallica underwent several lineup changes, Hetfield maintained his dual role as vocalist and rhythm guitarist. This position became fundamental to the band’s identity.

Gallagher’s account now confirms this historical detail. His revelation adds another dimension to Metallica’s complex early history and their journey toward becoming metal’s most influential acts.
