Melvins’ Dale Crover Admits Dave Lombardo Influenced His Drumming

Mr. Bungle and the Melvins are gearing up for a joint venture: ‘The Geek Show’ tour. As a prelude to this much-anticipated event, drummers Dale Crover and Dave Lombardo got candid in a recent episode of Consequence’s ‘Two For The Road.’ During the conversation, Crover openly admitted he picked up a drumming tip from his touring partner Lombardo.

During their recent chat, Dale Crover and Dave Lombardo revealed that they got inspired by each others’ drumming approach. Crover confessed that he learned about Lombardo’s method of putting toms in the monitors from Randy Hawkins, their mutual sound guy. He then gave it a try and found it worked for him. Yes, you heard it right. Dale Crover admitted he adopted a drumming technique because of Dave Lombardo!

Here is what Dave Lombardo recalled:

“When we played on stage together, you had a massive drum sound on stage, and you knew how to dial in your monitor system. I felt anemic. I had the big double bass kit, but my sound? You couldn’t compare; it was apples and oranges. You had a massive sound — you had a subwoofer, you had your wedge. I don’t know if you remember this, but then I had just a little wedge.

Dale Crover said:

“How come I got the sub, but you didn’t?”

Lombardo responded:

“You had the room! Because I had the gong.”

Crover then understood:

“Oh, okay, that’s what it was.”

Lombardo continued:

“I had the gong, so I never put two and two together. Like, you know, ‘Hey, let me pump up my sound on stage.’ And I never thought of it that way.”

Crover then revealed he was inspired by Lombardo as well:

“Well, that’s funny that you say that because our sound guy for a while was Randy Hawkins, who was also your guys’ sound guy. He’s the one that told me that you put toms and stuff in the monitors, and I’m like, ‘Really?’ And so I started doing that.”

Surprised, Lombardo said:

“Oh, you did?”

Crover confirmed:

Because of you! Yeah.”
