A new Tool album might have been on the road, but apparently, the members’ egos prevent it.

In a new interview with Metal Hammer, Maynard James Keenan discussed the long wait since their 2019 album ‘Fear Inoculum.’ He also compared Tool’s work to A Perfect Circle’s.

According to Keenan, the band’s egos and disagreements are what slow down the album-making process. He explained:

“Tool is a more complicated beast with a lot of egos and a lot of other things going on in our lives. But all the creativity’s there, the songs and the ideas can flow and the arguments ensue. As soon as we get past the arguments, we can get sh*t done! Ha ha ha! I think we could do it more efficiently. And I think everyone’s on the same page that we have to get through that, because we can’t drag this out another 14 years.”

How Much Time Will The Album Take?

Tool will be heading back to the studio this summer to write and record their next album. They will be using the same studio in Hollywood that they’ve been using for over 30 years. The 5-year wait since the release of ‘Fear Inoculum’ will come to an end with the new album. This time, Tool is not a fan of waiting for 13 more years the way they did before their 2019 album.

In another interview with Metal Hammer, the bassist Justin Chancellor shared some details about the album and reassured fans that this next album won’t take long:

“Danny [Carey, Tool drummer] is 62 now, so there’s no thought of taking 13 years if we’re gonna do it. We’re gonna have to be more efficient, and we’ve been talking of ways that we can do that. We put a little work in before this tour. We gave it a stab for a couple of months. We ended up compiling all the ideas we had; normally when we do that we start writing pretty soon after, but we had a lot of stuff coming up, so we didn’t dive all the way in. When we’re done with Europe, we’re gonna dive back in during the second half of the year.”

It Might Not Be An Album

Though the fans will not be waiting for too long this time, the next release might not be an album. During a chat in October, Chancellor hinted that the band has a lot of ideas brewing for the new album but clarified that they haven’t started recording anything yet.

The band also considered the possibility of putting out an EP instead of a full album to get their music out into the world faster. All the members have been pitching in with musical ideas, and according to Carey, ‘it’s going well so far.’

So, even though it’s unclear if it’s an EP or an entire album, it’s safe to say that we will be hearing new music in the next 13 years. Meanwhile, you can listen to Tool’s latest record below.
