Tool and Puscifer’s Maynard James Keenan recently discussed his influences for combining music with humor. He shared insights about his creative process in an interview with Consequence.
The conversation centered around the intersection of music and comedy in Keenan’s work. When asked about what influences this unique blend in his artistic approach, the vocalist provided detailed insights into his creative development.
“The early influences for me were you like Monty Python and the way that they would insert, you know, every sperm is sacred and, you know, always look on the bright side of life, those kinds of things,” Keenan said.
He then elaborated on how Tenacious D played a crucial role in his understanding of this artistic fusion.
“And then Tenacious D — doing some shows with them in the early days, where like cuz I was just there to kind of do comedy stuff and whatever I could, whatever I could discard in sketch stuff, then Tenacious D closes the show, and you’re like oh f*ck yeah let’s do something, you know, like that. Where it’s I kind of stepped it up,” he continued. “It was integral for me to figure out how to, it’s not easy, integrating the comedy with the music is hard.”
Keenan’s journey with comedy and music extends far beyond these recent revelations. His roots trace back to his early career ventures and formative experiences in the entertainment industry.
Louder Sound reported that Keenan’s first taste of chart success actually came through comedy music when he voiced a pig in Green Jellö’s 1993 hit “Three Little Pigs.” The song reached the US Top 20 before Tool’s “Sober” became a hit. This early experience with comedy-punk pranksters Green Jellö provided him with hands-on experience in blending humor with musical performance.
The origins of Puscifer itself are deeply rooted in comedy. 98 KUPD noted that the band’s name originated from Keenan’s role as the lead singer of a fictitious band in a sketch on the 1990s comedy series *Mr. Show*. This connection to sketch comedy has remained a defining characteristic of Puscifer’s identity throughout the band’s evolution.
Keenan’s comedy influences extend beyond just Monty Python and Tenacious D. YouTube documented that he has cited Kids in the Hall among his biggest comedy influences. This demonstrates the breadth of his comedic inspirations. These diverse influences have shaped his approach to integrating absurdist humor into his musical projects.
