Maynard James Keenan recently addressed his controversial no-cell phone policy during concerts with Tool, Puscifer, and A Perfect Circle. He explained the real reasoning behind the strict enforcement in an interview on Steve-O’s Wild Ride! Podcast.
The Tool frontman emphasized that the policy is primarily about respecting fellow concertgoers rather than protecting the band’s performance.
“Well, it’s not about us. It’s about the person in front of you, or sorry, behind you. Because they’re having to look at the show,” Keenan said. “This person paid like 70 bucks for a ticket and now I’m back here trying to see the show through your phone. That’s just it’s rude to the people.”
Keenan acknowledged that his bands do allow limited phone use during select moments of their performances.
“That’s why we pick a couple songs and go, ‘you can film these.’ But don’t ruin somebody else’s experience for the rest of the show,” he continued. “It’s just it’s selfish and it’s you’re unaware of your behavior. It’s just become so… normal.”
The musician’s stance on concert etiquette reflects his broader commitment to creating meaningful live experiences for his audiences across all three of his major musical projects.
Keenan’s phone policy has been consistently enforced across his various touring ventures. This demonstrates the scale and reach of his influence in the live music industry. Metal Injection reported that Tool shows regularly draw massive crowds, with performances at venues like San Francisco’s Bill Graham Civic Auditorium attracting over 17,000 attendees across multiple nights.
The enforcement of these policies extends beyond Tool to encompass Keenan’s other musical endeavors. Local Spins noted that recent Sessanta tour stops featuring Tool, Puscifer, A Perfect Circle, and Primus have filled major venues like Van Andel Arena with approximately 7,500 fans. This showcases the widespread application of his concert guidelines.
The financial success of these strictly managed performances underscores the effectiveness of Keenan’s approach. Metal Injection found that Tool concerts consistently generate substantial revenue, with individual shows grossing over $500,000 while maintaining high attendance rates at venues across the country.
Keenan’s multi-band approach allows him to implement consistent concert etiquette standards across different musical styles and audiences. Wikipedia documented that as the lead singer of Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer, Keenan has established himself as a prominent figure in alternative and progressive rock. This gives him significant influence over live music culture and fan behavior expectations.
