Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan shared an emotional tribute to his son Devo on Instagram. He was reacting to the 31-year-old’s decision to pursue a career in law rather than music.
Keenan posted photos from Devo’s swearing-in ceremony. He accompanied them with a heartfelt message reflecting on his son’s milestone and his own pride as a father.
“I woke up today and my son, Devo, was 31. Seems like only yesterday I was stealing his cookies and juice boxes,” Keenan said. “Now he’s passed the Bar and been sworn in. Officially a practicing Lawyer.”
The Tool frontman went on to express just how deeply the moment affected him, choosing words that went beyond simple congratulations.
“To say I’m proud feels condescending,” he continued. “He is my superior in many if not all ways. Hope you had a special day. We processed about 8 tons of fruit today to your namesake soundtrack.”
Keenan’s post highlighted the contrast between his own rock music career and his son’s path into the legal profession. He celebrated Devo’s achievement with both humor and sincerity.
What makes the moment particularly striking is that Devo grew up deeply embedded in the world of music. His pivot to law is all the more notable because of it.
Devo is the son of Keenan and his former fiancée, Jennifer Brena Ferguson. He was raised in a creative environment shaped by his father’s career across Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer — three of rock’s most critically regarded acts.
Despite that upbringing, Devo had already carved out his own identity in music before choosing law. He contributed backing vocals to A Perfect Circle’s Thirteenth Step and was later credited as a cellist on Ashes Divide’s Keep Telling Myself It’s Alright.
Devo and his father also shared the stage together on multiple occasions, most notably with Puscifer. Those performances gave fans a rare glimpse of the Keenan family dynamic in a live setting.
The decision to step away from that world and pass the Bar is a significant one. Keenan’s Instagram post made clear that he views it not as a departure, but as a testament to his son’s character and drive.
