Maynard James Keenan Couldn’t Tell The Difference Between AC/DC And Sex Pistols

Maynard James Keenan decided to join the Army after graduating from high school. Unlike many other artists, he wasn’t the son of parents interested in music. However, Keenan still had a passion for music growing inside him. In a recent interview with San Antonio Current, Keenan revealed that he was listening to bands like AC/DC and Sex Pistols as a kid.

For a teenager who is newly introduced to the rock music scene, it might be hard to see the musical differences between two music acts. As it turns out, this was the case with Maynard James Keenan, who believed almost every rock and roll band sounded the same. So, he argued it was easy for him to confuse AC/DC with the punk rebels Sex Pistols.

“Back then, I couldn’t tell the difference between AC/DC and Sex Pistols,” said Maynard James Keenan when he remembered the time he discovered the rock and roll scene. “There are guitars, and there’s a guy screaming, and everything’s in 4/4. I didn’t know the difference until someone pointed it out. ‘Oh, these guys got arrested, and these guys didn’t.'”

AC/DC and Sex Pistols are pretty different from each other in terms of their genre, as one is a renowned rock and roll band with a bluesy sound while the other belongs to the punk movement. However, due to both bands’ screaming vocals and heavy guitar sounds, young Keenan had a hard time telling the difference between the two. Later, he eventually realized the Sex Pistols were the notorious ones.
