Max Cavalera recently opened up about his decision to leave Sepultura. He explained how staying with the band would have compromised his personal values in an interview with Louder Sound.

The metal veteran reflected on the difficult but necessary choice he made to preserve his artistic integrity.

“One thing I’m proud of with leaving Sepultura is that I stuck to my guns,” Cavalera said. “If I’d stayed with them, it would have been wrong for my integrity.”

The musician further elaborated on the personal toll the situation was taking on him.

“I couldn’t sing those songs in that environment,” he continued. “It was killing me, so I had to make a stand and do something drastic. I’ve never regretted that choice.”

Cavalera’s departure from Sepultura in 1996 marked a significant turning point in his career. It led him to form Soulfly and continue his musical journey on his own terms.

The circumstances surrounding Cavalera’s exit were deeply personal and traumatic. They added layers of complexity to his decision that went far beyond artistic differences.

Last.fm reported that Cavalera left the band shortly after the tragic death of his stepson Dana Wells in a car accident. This event deeply affected him emotionally. The loss created a profound shift in his perspective and priorities. It made the existing tensions within the band even more unbearable.

The situation became even more complicated when the band attempted to remove his wife Gloria Bujnowski. Wikipedia noted that she was also Wells’ mother and the band’s manager. This move by his bandmates was a key factor in his feeling of betrayal. The action felt like a personal attack during an already devastating period of grief. It prompted his abrupt exit from Sepultura.

His final performance with the band was at Brixton Academy in December 1996. This marked the end of an era for one of metal’s most influential acts. The timing of his departure came so soon after personal tragedy. It highlighted the deep rift that had formed between Cavalera and his former bandmates.

Years later, Cavalera maintains his stance on the band’s current state. Louder Sound revealed that he has remarked that Sepultura continues without him and his brother Igor. However, it’s no longer the same band they originally founded in 1984. He believes that many fans associate the true spirit of Sepultura with him and Igor, rather than the current lineup. This reinforces his belief that leaving was the right decision for preserving the band’s legacy and his own integrity.
