Soulfly’s frontman Max Cavalera recently sat down with Scott Itter of Dr. Music for a chat, where he opened up about his disinterest in Sepultura’s musical efforts following his exit from the band.
When asked whether he has listened to any of the music albums released by Sepultura after he left the band, the singer responded:
“I haven’t. It’s like… People say if you break up with your wife and she marries somebody else, you don’t really go on Facebook and go see what they’re doing. [You keep your] distance. I feel kind of like that. So I have no interest. I’ve got a lot of stuff to keep me busy. It’s a fair question, and I’m sure a lot of people wonder about that, but, yeah, I haven’t [heard anything].”
Behind The Scenes Tensions

Cavalera left Sepultura in 1996 after over a decade with the band, marking a significant change. His departure followed internal conflicts, particularly regarding the role of Gloria, his wife and the band’s manager.
Tensions increased due to a family tragedy and differing views on management, culminating in a major dispute in Buenos Aires. While some blame Gloria for the split, Max sees it differently. In an interview with The Dan Chow Show in 2022, the rocker expressed:
“And a lot of people end up blaming my wife, Gloria. They always go, ‘She broke up the band.’ And the truth is we grew apart; we started hating each other, man. It happened to The Beatles and it happened to many other bands — Pantera. It’s just how it is. We just didn’t find the joy in playing with each other anymore, and it was time to move on.”
After leaving Sepultura, Cavalera has been active in the music scene, creating bands like Soulfly, Nailbomb, and Killer Be Killed. In a February 2023 chat with Rock Interview Series, he talked about the possibility of rejoining Sepultura. Max decided against a reunion, explaining that he is too busy with his current bands and projects, with Soulfly being his main focus. He feels he doesn’t need a reunion and sees no real reason for it.
