Matt Cameron recently commented on upcoming Soundgarden recordings featuring previously unreleased material with late frontman Chris Cornell. He shared his thoughts in an interview with Allison Hagendorf.

The band is working on new music that combines familiar elements with fresh creative directions. When discussing the project, Cameron reflected on the emotional complexity of revisiting work created before Cornell’s death.

“There’s very familiar elements in some of this new music, but, yeah, there was a couple songs that felt like it was kind of a new chapter or it could have been a new chapter,” Cameron said. “So it’s really exciting to hear that. It’s bittersweet, of course.”

Cameron emphasized his enthusiasm for sharing the material with fans. He also acknowledged the emotional weight of the process and noted that listening to the recordings can be overwhelming at times.

“But, yeah, I’m really excited for people to hear it, have our fans hear it,” he continued. “It’s fun for us to be working on it. And sometimes listening to it, it’s overpowering. But, yeah, I’m super proud of the music that we did put together. And we’re pretty close [to finishing it]. And, yeah, it is nice having Terry (Date, producer) on board with us, for sure.”

The band is nearing completion of the project with producer Terry Date’s involvement. This posthumous album represents a significant moment for Soundgarden as they prepare to share material that captures the band’s creative energy during their final years together.

The recordings come from demos and rough rehearsal sessions spanning 2015 to early 2017, according to Lyndsanity. This timeframe gives the project deep roots in Soundgarden’s final creative phase before Cornell’s passing. The band was particularly prolific during these years, just before Cornell’s death in May 2017.

The upcoming album includes the track “The Road Less Traveled,” which was co-written by Cameron and Cornell around 2016, as reported by American Songwriter. Cameron has described this track as a potential gift to both fans and Cornell’s legacy. It stands as a particularly meaningful addition to the final album.

The project holds special significance as Soundgarden continues to honor Cornell’s memory while completing work that was left unfinished. Blabbermouth reported that the band has expressed genuine excitement about sharing these recordings with their fanbase. They view the album as both a celebration of their creative partnership and a fitting tribute to their late frontman. The combination of previously unreleased material and producer Terry Date’s expertise ensures that these final recordings will receive the professional treatment they deserve.
