In a recent post on X, Machine Gun Kelly acknowledged Nelly’s influence on his early sexual experience.
At the ‘Grammy Salute to 50 Years of Hip-Hop’ concert of the Recording Academy, the musician introduced DJ Diamond Kuts and 2 Chainz. The singer started his words, sharing the influence of hip-hop on him:
“The greatest thing that happened to me besides becoming a father is hip-hop. It was there for me when I was sad, when I was mad at the world, and most importantly, in the seventh grade when a girl decided to dance on me to ‘Hot In Here’ by Nelly [pointing to Nelly]. Thank you.”
MGK concluded his introduction, saying:
“To me, hip-hop has always been the life of the party, and the party is just getting started. Right now, get off your seats, get on your feet. DJ Diamond Kuts and the Grammy Award winner 2 Chainz.”

Later, Kelly took to X to confirm what he told at the night and wrote:
“True story.”
MGK’s Career Evolution

The musician started his career in the late 2000s and early 2010s as a rapper. His early albums, such as ‘Lace Up’ and ‘General Admission’ are firmly in the rap/hip-hop genre and were well-received, both commercially and critically. Around 2020, MGK made a shift in his musical style from hip-hop to a more rock and pop-punk-oriented sound.
His Return To Hip-Hop

His albums’ Tickets to My Downfall’ and ‘Mainstream Sellout’ were major successes in this new genre. Still, during a 2022 interview with Audacy Check In’s Kevan Kenney, Kelly discussed his future musical direction and expressed his intention to return to hip-hop in his next album. He said:
“I’m going to make a rap album for myself. For no other reason, no point to prove, no chip on my shoulder. If I keep doing things to prove things to people, I’m going to one, drive myself crazy and two, not make a good product.”
He added, detailing his plans for his next project:
“I made ‘Tickets’ and ‘Mainstream Sellout’ because I wanted to make them. I need to now also make people miss that sound. I’m going to do this tour, and I’m gonna step into where I left ‘Hotel Diablo’ and expand on my storytelling as a rapper and find a new innovative sound for the hip-hop Machine Gun Kelly. That’s where my excitement is and where me as a music archaeologist wants to explore.”
In May 2023, MGK released a single named ‘Pressure,’ marking his return to rap. He also launched a new album with lofi producer lonelyboy, called ‘lofi chill vibes with Machine Gun Kelly’ on November 17. This album features relaxed lofi versions of songs from MGK’s last three albums.
