M. Shadows Recalls How Daft Punk Got Him Inspired In The Shower

As Avenged Sevenfold gears up for the release of their upcoming album, ‘Life Is but a Dream…’ on June 2, M. Shadows is sharing with fans the creative journey that brought the album to life. In a recent chat with Kerrang, Shadows revealed Daft Punk’s unexpected spark of inspiration that struck him in the middle of his shower routine.

Shadows has been open about his admiration for Daft Punk’s work, particularly their album ‘Random Access Memories,’ which he viewed as a masterpiece of music production. So, it’s not completely surprising that Daft Punk popped up in Shadows’ mind during his shower time, leading him to come up with a catchy vocal melody.

Here is what M. Shadows recalled about Daft Punk’s influence on him:

“It’s like walking down the street and having a concept or sitting in the shower and being bored. We probably sat around and worked on a vocal melody for ‘We Love You’ on the verses for five days, and it was dogsh*t. And then one day, I was sitting in the shower, and I was like, ‘More this, more that.’ I was inspired by Daft Punk’s ‘Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger.’ It was simple; it was four words.

I was like, ‘It’s four words; why are we making this so difficult?’ And all of a sudden, it was like, ‘That’s it.‘ It was six days of wasted grinding, and I don’t think it necessarily led us to the promised land. I think if you allow yourself to be bored, you read a lot of stuff, you look at a lot of art, and you listen to a lot of music. I think it’s an easier way to come up with those little gems, and you can build off them.”

While some might find this Daft Punk influence surprising for a metal band, Shadows sees no reason to shy away from using elements from other genres in Avenged Sevenfold’s music. Apparently, he finds ‘groove’ as something to be embraced, not shied away from – even in metal.
