Avenged Sevenfold frontman M. Shadows recently shared his perspective on fan criticism and the music industry’s tendency to over-analyze new releases. He discussed his approach to handling negative feedback in an interview with FIRE.

The vocalist addressed the common phenomenon of fan debates surrounding new music releases. He explained his philosophy on staying true to artistic vision regardless of public opinion.

‘It happens when if Blink-182 puts out a record, you’ve got all sorts of drama, especially Metallica, Metallica puts out a record,’ M. Shadows said. ‘You’ve got months and months of debates over things that should never be debated. Cool, say your opinion is what it is, but it’s just so much fluff.’

He went on to share a personal example of how initial reactions can change over time.

‘I even had that with the new Metallica album, right? I put it on, I was like I’ve heard this before,’ he continued. ‘And then, one day I was on the golf course, I threw it on again, I like this, you know? Because you just get out of your own way, you know? Do I like this or not?’

M. Shadows emphasized the importance of maintaining perspective and staying committed to one’s artistic choices.

‘And so, it’s one of those things where we’re all human and there’s just funny little things that we do and little things that you have to deal with,’ he said. ‘But if you have that north star or at least that macro worldview where none of this really matters, you have to put out the things that you fully back at the time you’re putting it out, then you can’t really go wrong. You really can’t.’

The frontman concluded by explaining how this mindset helps him handle fan criticism more effectively.

‘And so, when you have that perspective of music, it also makes the pressure of fan opinion kind of go off your back because you realize where they’re at,’ he said. ‘They may have grown up with one record, and now, they’re in a completely different part of their life, and they’re throwing it on for a second, and then they’re like this sucks, I’m gonna write about how it sucks. And maybe it does suck, but maybe it doesn’t. Maybe they’re gonna come back to it because we all see that when people come back to a record a year later and go, I was wrong.’

‘These things take a long time to kind of dig their heels into society,’ M. Shadows added. ‘And that’s not up to us or anyone else to decide how that plays out. You just have to write it and move on. Write it, move on. Drop it, move on and just not worry about that stuff.’

M. Shadows’ comments come at a time when Avenged Sevenfold continues to push creative boundaries. They are also honoring their legacy, demonstrating the very philosophy he describes in practice.

Wikipedia reported that the band released their most recent studio album, Life Is But a Dream…, in June 2023. The release marked a highly experimental direction that exemplifies their commitment to artistic evolution regardless of fan expectations. This experimental approach aligns with M. Shadows’ stated belief in backing the music they create at the time of release.

The band’s approach to balancing innovation with nostalgia reflects the frontman’s mature perspective on fan reactions. WMMR noted that 2025 will see the band celebrating two major album anniversaries—20 years for City of Evil and 15 years for Nightmare. Guitarist Zacky Vengeance has expressed the band’s intention to honor these albums while maintaining their forward momentum.

‘I never want to be a nostalgia act. I’ve always wanted to be as proud of whatever we put out today as I was when we put out those albums, but I’m totally cool with celebrating those albums because it was such a great place and time,’ Vengeance said.

Record Culture announced that a special vinyl reissue of City of Evil has been planned for 2025 to mark its 20th anniversary. This commemorative release demonstrates how the band continues to respect their legacy while pursuing new creative directions. It embodies the balanced approach M. Shadows advocates for handling both criticism and praise.

The band’s current touring strategy also reflects their selective approach to public engagement. Kerrang confirmed that M. Shadows stated Avenged Sevenfold will only play one U.S. date in 2025. The band will focus more on returning to Europe that summer. This limited schedule aligns with their philosophy of quality over quantity and their intention to deliver meaningful experiences around both new and classic material.
