In a recent interview with Ultimate Classic Rock, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Rickey Medlocke shared his views on the progression of southern rock music and recognized Jelly Roll’s contribution to the genre in particular. He talked about Roll overcoming the difficulties in his life and reflecting them in his music. He stated:
“I think, first of all, he is the real deal. I mean, you can’t get no more real than that dude. I mean, of everything that that guy’s been through, and he portrays that. And I really believe deep down — I mean, I really believe he is grateful for everything. You know what I mean? It could have gone really the wrong way for him all the way. But it didn’t, you know, somehow he found a blessing and he got out of it. And came out with great songs. There you go.”
Medlocke believes that today’s music no longer has no limits. Medlocke also praised Kid Rock, believing that the blending of the genres benefited southern music. He continued:
“I think all the genres of music crosses each other. And I believe that, you know, even thinking about Kid Rock. Kid Rock crossed over in the genre, where he’s done well with it. And now you’ve got people like Jelly Roll and you’ve got — you know, you’ve had other bands that have done it. And I mean, personally for me, if your heart and your soul is in it, and the feel is in it, then what’s the big deal? Music, and the music world, is forever changing. As long as you’ve got talented people reaching out and trying different things, then it’s gonna change.”
Brent Smith Counts On Jelly Roll

Jelly Roll has been making a name for himself in the rock scene lately. As Roll devotes himself to country rock, rock stars are recognizing him more and more. One of those rock stars is Brent Smith of Shinedown, who thinks Jelly Roll is crucial for the future of rock music. In November this year, Smith revealed to Loudwire Nights the artists he thinks are ‘necessary’ for rock music. Smith, who praised Roll of his work drive, said:
“Talk about somebody that is 100 percent necessary. I love that man. I’m so happy for him, and it is so awesome to watch his rise. It could not be more deserving to a guy — it didn’t happen overnight. This dude has been working his a** off…he is a hard, hard worker, and it is so inspiring the watch. He’s a dear friend, and I love him so much.”
Roll, who also had a surprise feature on Dolly Parton’s ‘Rockstar’ album this year, is cementing his place in the rock world.
