Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Rickey Medlocke shared his views on live performances during an appearance on Ted Nugent’s Spirit Campfire.

“You [Ted Nugent] and I and a select few others are probably the only ones that go out there every night and actually play our instruments,” Medlocke told Ted Nugent. “We use no pre-recorded stuff and I know that it’s necessary sometimes for a lot of reasons for some people.”

“But for Lynyrd Skynyrd and for Ted Nugent and a select few of others, we go out there we actually play our instruments,” he continued. “We live and breathe what we do.”

The music industry currently faces ongoing discussions about the use of backing tracks and pre-recorded elements in live performances.

Medlocke’s comments highlight a growing debate within the rock music community about live performance authenticity.

Ultimate Classic Rock reported on recent controversies surrounding the band Santa Cruz’s use of pre-recorded vocals. This incident intensified discussions about authenticity in live music.

Backing tracks have become commonplace in modern live performances. Some artists defend their use for complex studio arrangements. Others maintain a purist approach to live music.

Lynyrd Skynyrd has built their reputation on powerful live performances. Their shows consistently feature extensive guitar work and vocal harmonies. The band remains committed to delivering authentic live music.

Medlocke and Nugent have established themselves as industry traditionalists. They continue to advocate for completely live performances without pre-recorded elements.
