Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich recently addressed the possibility of the band performing at the Super Bowl Halftime Show. He shared his enthusiastic response during an appearance on Sirius XM’s The Howard Stern Show.
Ulrich expressed clear enthusiasm for the opportunity when asked about the possibility of Metallica performing at the Super Bowl Halftime Show in 2026.
“F*ck yeah, of course we would,” Ulrich said. “First of all we would do it.”
The drummer went on to explain why a San Francisco performance would hold special significance for the band.
“Second of all to do it in San Francisco would be a dream come true and would be the right fit,” he continued. “Certainly as somebody who’s represented San Francisco all over the world and shouted for decades about San Francisco and our love for the Bay Area, that part of it is the right fit.”
Ulrich concluded by acknowledging that the final decision would not rest with the band.
“Ultimately it’s not our decision,” he said.
Ulrich’s enthusiasm reflects Metallica’s deep connection to the Bay Area, where their journey began and continues to thrive. The potential Super Bowl performance would represent a homecoming of sorts for the legendary metal band.
Metallica’s ties to San Francisco run deeper than most realize. Vinyl Me Please reported that the band has their headquarters just a stone’s throw away from Levi’s Stadium, where the 2026 Super Bowl will be held. This proximity would make the performance particularly meaningful for both the band and their local fanbase.
The potential appearance would mark a significant moment for heavy metal at the Super Bowl. Ultimate Classic Rock noted that the NFL has rarely featured hard rock or heavy metal bands in the halftime show throughout its history. Metallica’s inclusion would represent a rare opportunity for the genre to reach one of television’s largest audiences.
Fan demand for Metallica’s Super Bowl appearance has been building momentum. The Spectator News highlighted that there’s been significant public support for the band to headline the prestigious halftime slot. Many argue that their legendary status and widespread appeal make them ideal candidates for the show.
The band continues to explore ambitious projects beyond the potential Super Bowl performance. Vinyl Me Please revealed that Metallica is actively looking toward future innovative performances and possible residencies. This signals their commitment to staying at the forefront of the entertainment industry as they consider this monumental opportunity.
