Lars Ulrich Recalls The Good Times He Had With Jason Newsted While Sending Him A Birthday Message

Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich shared a post on his official Instagram page celebrating the 58th birthday of his former bandmate, bassist Jason Newsted with a throwback picture from 1987 when the two looked like the ultimate rock stars with their outfit and hairdo.

As many of you know, during the Damage, Inc. Tour, Metallica’s bassist Cliff Burton tragically passed away when the band’s tour bus crashed on September 27, 1986. After Burton’s death, the band began searching for a new bassist and auditioned over 50 musicians, ending up with Jason Newsted who was the last in line.

Newsted’s first live performance with Metallica was at the Country Club in Reseda, California, on November 8, 1986, and his first studio album with the band was ‘…And Justice for All’ which was released in 1988 and heavily criticized for its murky bass sound. In order to focus on his side-project Echobrain, Newsted left Metallica in January 2001.

Spending more than a decade together, Lars Ulrich shared a post on his official Instagram page in order to celebrate his former bandmate Jason Newsted’s 58th birthday with an old picture together that’s 34-year-old. In the picture, both Ulrich and Newsted are wearing the ultimate rock star outfit with their tight jeans, sleeveless shirt, and their frizzy long hair.

Here is what Ulrich said:

“Tight jeans…check
White sneakers…check
Sleeveless shirt…check
Sapporo Beer…check
Brush long hair…check

Happy Birthday Jason 🎉
Here’s to all the good times along the way…”
