Kyle Gass recently addressed fan criticism regarding his Tenacious D bandmate Jack Black. He responded to accusations about the band’s hiatus in a post shared on Instagram.
The response came after Gass promoted Jack Black’s upcoming Saturday Night Live hosting appearance. This drew mixed reactions from fans.
“Don’t forget to tune in this Saturday to NBCSNL to watch Tenacious D superstar Jack Black host Saturday Night Live with my other bandmate Jack White as musical guest,” Gass wrote. “Sure to be a memorable evening of music and comedy.”
When a fan commented “It’s a shame Jack Black killed Tenacious D,” Gass offered a defiant response.
“You can’t kill the D,” Gass replied.
The exchange highlights ongoing fan sentiment about the band’s extended break following an onstage incident. It also demonstrates Gass’s continued support for his longtime musical partner.
Gass’s response comes amid ongoing speculation about the comedy rock duo’s future following their controversial hiatus in July 2024.
The band’s break began after Gass made an inappropriate joke during a July 2024 performance in Sydney about the attempted assassination of Donald Trump. Kerrang reported that Gass referenced “not missing next time.” This sparked immediate backlash and prompted Jack Black to cancel their remaining tour dates and put all future creative plans on hold.
Black stated he was “blindsided” by his bandmate’s comment and condemned political violence in his response to the incident. Men’s Journal noted that Gass later called it “terrible judgment” and his “fuck-up.” He said the intense fallout felt like “Defcon 2” in their camp.
However, recent interviews suggest the duo has worked through their differences. Chaos Zine confirmed that Gass reconciled with Black after “hashing it out” and expressed regret about the incident while teasing a potential comeback.
“We will be back. We will return,” Gass said in a recent Rolling Stone interview. He added with characteristic humor, “gonna be bigger than Oasis!” He also quipped, “We will serve no D-wine before it’s D-time,” though he provided no exact timeline for their return.
Despite the hiatus, Tenacious D released a compilation album, The Complete Masterworks, Vol 3, last year featuring live recordings from their pre-cancellation tour. Gass is also continuing his solo work. He is touring Europe and the UK in May with his Kyle Gass Company on the “3 Man Job Tour.”
