Kyle Gass has announced a new live album with his band, Kyle Gass Band, while Tenacious D remains on hiatus following Jack Black’s decision to pause the band after Gass’ controversial act during a live show in 2024. The announcement was made through an official statement shared on Instagram.
The Kyle Gass Band revealed details about their upcoming live album, recorded at a recent performance venue.
“A perfect start to the new year: a new album out from the Kyle Gass Band!” the band announced. “‘LIVE IN PALMDALE’ is now available for pre-order.”
The statement continued with additional details about the recording and release.
“12 rippin’ tracks recorded live at Transplants Brewing Company,” they said. “Album out 1/23. Get into the groove, you know where to go.”
This announcement marks Gass’ continued musical activity despite Tenacious D’s current hiatus, with the live album set for release on January 23rd.
The current situation represents a significant pause for a duo that has entertained audiences for over three decades. Louder Sound reported that Jack Black and Kyle Gass were both members of the experimental LA theatre collective The Actor’s Gang in the mid-80s before forming their comedy rock partnership.
The duo officially established Tenacious D in 1994. They built their reputation through a unique blend of comedy and rock music. Wikipedia noted that the comedy musical duo has achieved notable recognition in the music industry, winning one Grammy for Best Metal Performance.
The band’s hiatus stems from a controversial incident during a live performance in 2024. AV Club revealed that Black canceled the band’s tour and put “all future creative plans” on hold because his partner Kyle Gass joked onstage that his birthday wish was related to a sensitive political topic.
While Tenacious D remains on pause, Gass’ decision to move forward with his solo project demonstrates his commitment to continuing his musical career. The Kyle Gass Band’s upcoming live album represents a new chapter for the musician as he navigates this period of uncertainty with his longtime collaborator.
