Smashing Pumpkins guitarist Kiki Wong shared her journey from struggling musician to stadium performer on Instagram.
“I never in a million years thought I’d be where I am today,” Wong said. “From tours sleeping in the trunk of vans to touring the world first class, from walking away from music for years and dealing with substance abuse to growing on social media and joining the legendary Smashing Pumpkins and selling out stadiums—there have been countless moments where I could have (and ‘logically’ should have) given up for good.”
“My biggest piece of advice? Fail. Fail so hard, so excruciatingly and painfully hard, that failure becomes your best friend,” she continued. “Because it’s in those moments—the lowest, hardest ones—that the magic truly happens. Do you get up, dust yourself off, and keep going? Do you learn from every setback and evolve? Do you fight for your truth to the point of insanity? Yes.”
“But perseverance alone isn’t enough,” Wong added. “I owe so much to the incredible people I’ve met along this journey—friends, mentors, loved ones—who believed in me when I struggled to believe in myself.”
Wong’s remarkable journey to The Smashing Pumpkins demonstrates her perseverance through various musical endeavors and personal challenges.
Audacy reported that Wong’s early career included founding Nylon Pink. The groundbreaking all-Asian-American girl band helped establish her presence in the music industry.

The selection process for The Smashing Pumpkins was highly competitive. Audacy revealed that Wong emerged victorious from a pool of over 10,000 applicants. This achievement demonstrated both her exceptional talent and determination.
