Kid Rock faced backlash after making a joke using a slur during an appearance on Fox News’ “Jesse Watters Primetime” on Friday. The NBC News report details the incident.

The comedian joked that he would dress as a “r*tard” in a medical mask for Halloween. This prompted a response from Special Olympics leadership. Loretta Claiborne, chief inspiration officer for the Special Olympics, issued a statement addressing the use of the slur and its impact on people with intellectual disabilities.

“The R-Word deeply demeans and harms people with intellectual disabilities,” Claiborne said. “I’m writing to you personally with an urgent request: please acknowledge the hurt caused and use this moment to stand with us in rejecting that word and the prejudice it represents.”

Claiborne emphasized the broader struggle for recognition and dignity. “[People with intellectual disabilities are] still continuing to fight for the simplest form of justice: the recognition of our full humanity, a recognition you undermine when you use the word r*tard,” she continued.

The incident highlights the ongoing tension between public figures and advocacy organizations over language that affects marginalized communities. Intent does not mitigate harm when slurs are broadcast to millions of viewers, even when framed as a Halloween joke.

The Independent reported that the October 24, 2025, incident sparked significant controversy. Host Jesse Watters laughed at the remark, while audience reaction was largely negative. Many viewers called the comment cruel and outdated, particularly given its direct impact on people with intellectual disabilities.

The term Kid Rock used carries a long, painful history as a derogatory slur. Special Olympics notes that even casual use of the word reinforces stigma. It can reopen emotional wounds for individuals and families affected by intellectual disabilities. The organization emphasizes that public figures wield significant influence in shaping cultural attitudes toward marginalized communities.

Consequence highlighted how the Special Olympics framed the incident as a potential teachable moment. The organization invited Kid Rock to take responsibility and leverage his platform for positive change. Claiborne’s open letter emphasizes the organization’s “Spread the Word” campaign, which seeks to replace the r-word with “respect” and foster a more inclusive society.

Public reaction online and in media was overwhelmingly critical. Many pointed out that the slur should have no place in modern discourse. The episode underscores the ongoing need for sensitivity around language affecting people with intellectual disabilities. The Special Olympics’ response—personal, urgent, and constructive—aims to turn a harmful moment into an opportunity for societal progress.
