Tool’s Justin Chancellor has some new updates about the upcoming album.

Tool is looking forward to getting in the studio to write and record for their next studio album this summer in the same space in Hollywood they have been meeting for over 30 years. The 5-year wait since the release of ‘Fear Inoculum’ will come to an end with the new album.

In a new interview with Metal Hammer, the bassist revealed the details of the album, where he ensured fans it will not take another 13 years for a new album:

“Danny [Carey, Tool drummer] is 62 now, so there’s no thought of taking 13 years if we’re gonna do it. We’re gonna have to be more efficient, and we’ve been talking of ways that we can do that.”

As it comes to when the band is expecting to dive all the way into the album, Chancellor revealed:

“We put a little work in before this tour. We gave it a stab for a couple of months. We ended up compiling all the ideas we had; normally when we do that we start writing pretty soon after, but we had a lot of stuff coming up, so we didn’t dive all the way in. When we’re done with Europe, we’re gonna dive back in during the second half of the year.”

The Upcoming Album Will Be ‘Different’

Before the release of their latest album, ‘Fear Inoculum,’ the band’s latest release was ‘10,000 Days,’ which had a 13-year gap in between. Chatting about the new sound and lyrics of the album in an earlier interview, the bassist revealed that things are going to be a little different than their previous works. He detailed:

“It’ll be different this time. Everyone’s life is different, and everyone’s expectations are different. Time is precious now, so you try and look for ways to be more efficient with the process. We’ve had a lot of discussion about that and how we can bring a new record to fruition in a slightly different way.”

As for a possible musical direction for Tool’s next LP, the drummer Danny Carey said it could take turns:

“Who knows? It could flip-flop and we could just go back to doing an ‘Undertow’ [type of] record of shorter songs. That’s kind of appealing to me. I always like change, whatever direction it goes.”

You can hear ‘Undertow’ below.
