Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme recently opened up about the serious health issues he faced last year. These issues led to an extended period of recovery, as reported by Consequence.

Homme reflected on how his physical condition during the band’s performance in the Catacombs actually helped him maintain perspective during a difficult time.

“I was in a very difficult physical spot, and I’m really thankful that I was, actually,” Homme said. “I couldn’t think about anything else but where we were. It’s better that I was unwell, because I think if I was well, we would’ve maybe been more ‘California’ about it and thought ‘Man, it’s so cool to be here…’ And something about that kind of sucks.”

The musician then detailed the severity of his condition. He also described the lengthy recovery process that followed.

“I performed in the Catacombs, and within about 20 hours I was being sedated and put under,” he continued. “Then I spent the next seven months in bed. I had a lot of time to think, you know? I was told I was gonna spend 18 months, two years there, so I was not excited.”

The health crisis had significant implications for the band’s touring schedule. It marked a challenging period for both Homme and Queens of the Stone Age fans worldwide.

The Los Angeles Times revealed that the health emergency forced Queens of the Stone Age to cancel the remainder of their 2024 tour dates. The band had initially postponed shows starting in July. They ultimately cleared their entire schedule for the year to allow Homme to focus on his recovery and treatment.

The decision to cancel the tour represented a major shift for the band. iHeart confirmed that Queens of the Stone Age made plans to resume touring in 2025 once Homme’s health stabilized. This extended break from live performances was unprecedented for the typically active touring band.

Despite the lengthy recovery period, Homme’s return to music came sooner than many expected. Metal Injection documented that the frontman made his first public performance since the health incident in December 2024 during a tribute show for former bandmate Mark Lanegan.

The performance marked a significant milestone in Homme’s recovery journey. Reports indicated that he sounded great during his return to the stage. This appearance provided hope for fans eagerly awaiting the band’s full return to touring. It suggested that Homme’s health had improved considerably from the dire predictions he initially faced during his hospitalization.
