Josh Freese has made his first public statement about Foo Fighters following his departure from the band. He shared his thoughts in a post on Instagram.
The drummer reflected on his time with the band by highlighting one particular song that resonated with him during his tenure.
“Posted this last summer, but saw it yesterday and it reminded me how much I liked playing this song (Foo Fighters’ ‘Aurora’),” Freese said. “Dynamic and fervent.”
This marks Freese’s first public comment about his experience with Foo Fighters since his departure from the band.
Freese’s journey with Foo Fighters began under difficult circumstances. It ended unexpectedly after nearly two years of service with the legendary rock group.
Los Angeles Times reported that Freese joined Foo Fighters in 2023 following the tragic death of their original drummer, Taylor Hawkins. He toured with the band for nearly two years before being let go unexpectedly. The band informed him they were “going in a different direction” but provided no official reason for his dismissal.
Freese demonstrated his characteristic humor by addressing the situation directly with fans following his departure. American Songwriter noted that he shared a tongue-in-cheek list on social media outlining 10 possible reasons he might have been fired. These included demanding 20-minute cowbell sound baths at rehearsals, missing studio sessions due to Mercury retrograde, and his affection for poodles allegedly “getting to be a bit much.”
The drummer’s lighthearted approach to his dismissal reflects his professional attitude toward the unexpected career change. Ultimate Classic Rock highlighted that Freese’s humorous response to his firing showed both his resilience and ability to maintain good relationships despite professional setbacks.
The Foo Fighters have yet to announce a replacement drummer. Their next scheduled performance is set for October 4 in Singapore, leaving fans wondering about the band’s future direction without Freese behind the kit.
