Dream Theater keyboardist Jordan Rudess recently shared his thoughts on Mike Portnoy’s return to the band. He explained the significant impact the drummer’s comeback has had on the group. His comments were featured in an interview with Heavy Interviews.

Rudess emphasized Portnoy’s foundational role in Dream Theater and the unique skills he brings beyond drumming.

“Well, Mike Portnoy was there at the beginning and was instrumental in creating the sound of Dream Theater,” Rudess said. “There’s no denying it; it is what it is. So his return is amazing. It’s, like, welcome home and let’s continue on what you started.”

The keyboardist acknowledged the band’s success during Portnoy’s 13-year absence. He also highlighted the drummer’s specialized contributions.

“And here’s the thing: Portnoy is not only a really great drummer, but also he has so many other skills that he offers, that he puts into the band that — it’s unique; it’s really unique,” he continued. “I mean, when Portnoy was gone and we had 13 years without him, we managed fine. We won a Grammy, we played amazing shows all over the world, and it was good.”

Rudess detailed the specific areas where Portnoy’s expertise makes a difference for the band.

“Now that he’s back, though, there’s a reality to the fact that there’s so many things that he does that he specializes in, like setlists, like thinking along the lines of a movie director when it comes to albums and placing themes and all kinds of stuff that he’s just really good at and we really all appreciate so much,” he explained.

The keyboardist also praised Portnoy’s stage presence and connection with fans.

“And not only that, but having him with us when we’re out there performing,” Rudess added. “I mean, he’s a unique performer with a certain kind of charisma that’s really welcoming and the fans really are engaged with and it means a lot to the way the band comes off in a live experience. So, there’s a lot to it, there’s a lot to having him back that’s notable.”

Portnoy’s return marks a significant milestone for Dream Theater. He was instrumental in shaping the band’s early identity and sound. The drummer co-founded the progressive metal group and contributed to ten of their albums from their 1989 debut “When Dream And Day Unite” to 2009’s “Black Clouds & Silver Linings” before departing in 2010.

The band wasted no time capitalizing on Portnoy’s return. They released their latest album “Parasomnia” in 2025—marking the drummer’s first studio work with Dream Theater since 2009. Blabbermouth reported that the band plans to start thinking about a new album in late 2026 after completing the “Parasomnia” tour cycle.

The reunion has already proven successful on stage. Dream Theater played their first show with Portnoy in 14 years on October 20, 2024, at London’s O2 Arena. Loudwire noted that the band later issued a live album titled “Quarantième: Live à Paris,” capturing the energy of their reunion performances.

The creative process for “Parasomnia” demonstrated how Portnoy’s return affected the band’s workflow. Chaoszine revealed that Portnoy discussed his experience touring with the band after the 13-year hiatus. He highlighted how his presence has reinvigorated both the creative and performance aspects of Dream Theater.

The drummer’s multifaceted contributions extend beyond his percussion skills. They encompass everything from conceptual album planning to setlist curation—elements that Rudess clearly values as essential to Dream Theater’s identity and future direction.
