Guitarist John 5 recently weighed in on Mötley Crüe’s absence from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He shared his perspective on American Music Supply.

When asked why he believes the legendary rock band has yet to receive induction, John 5 expressed his support for their inclusion. He emphasized the importance of their cultural impact on the music industry.

“Oh, I have no idea. I’d vote for ’em. I have no idea. But if it was up to me, I’d have ’em in one day after the 25 years,” John 5 said.

The guitarist further elaborated on what he considers the most important criterion for Hall of Fame recognition.

“I think they should be in it, and I think it’d be wonderful. They deserve it, because I think it’s all about influence. And so many bands, so many countless musicians and bands have been influenced by Mötley Crüe. And I think it’s what’s important. So, yeah, it’s a head scratcher. But I think they deserve it by far. Yeah,” he continued.

John 5’s comments highlight the ongoing debate surrounding Mötley Crüe’s eligibility and recognition within the rock music establishment. His remarks about the 25-year threshold reference a key requirement in the Hall of Fame’s induction process.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame guidelines state that artists become eligible for induction 25 years after their first commercial record release. This applies regardless of genre, as long as their contributions advance rock and roll’s development. Mötley Crüe met this eligibility requirement in 2004, meaning they have been eligible for nearly two decades without receiving an induction.

The induction process involves a rigorous voting system. Ultimate Classic Rock reports that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame requires a minimum 50% vote from a main body of approximately 1,200 artists, historians, and industry professionals to advance candidates. Fan votes also influence the selection, though they do not solely determine the final inductees. Typically, 5-7 performers are inducted each year.

Despite their legendary status and undeniable influence on rock music, Mötley Crüe has not been inducted as of the 2025 class. The 2025 inductees include Bad Company, Joe Cocker, Chubby Checker, Soundgarden, White Stripes, Cyndi Lauper, and Outkast. Ideastream notes that eligibility persists indefinitely after the initial 25-year threshold. This means Mötley Crüe remains in consideration for future induction ceremonies.

John 5’s advocacy underscores a sentiment shared by many in the rock community. Mötley Crüe’s profound influence on countless musicians and bands should be sufficient grounds for their induction into the Hall of Fame.
