Joel Stroetzel recently shared some behind-the-scenes details about Killswitch Engage’s latest project. As they near the end of recording their new album, they’ve apparently faced a problem.
Telling Mathias Henrixon of ‘A Swedish Fika With…’ that the band recorded ‘too many’ songs for the upcoming record, the guitarist explained:
“[It’s a] good problem to have. That’ll be the tricky part, is once they’re all mixed, we’ll have to decide what’s gonna be on the record and what we can maybe save for B-sides or special things. We’ll figure that out. At least it’s done being recorded. That’s the big thing for us.”
Killswitch Engage’s upcoming album will be a follow-up to 2019’s ‘Atonement.’
The New Album Has Been Some Tough Work

According to frontman Jesse Leach, who rejoined the band in 2012, this new album has been their most difficult LP to record. About his bandmate’s words, Stroetzel said:
“Yeah. He came back and retracked a lot of stuff because he had… Over the past few years, he’s kind of trained his voice to do the fry technique live, which, it’s been great. It’s been kind of a godsend for him live, because he never blows his voice out anymore.”
Sharing the troubling part about the vocals, he continued:
“But I think him and Adam [Dutkiewicz] were finding when he was tracking, using that technique, he wasn’t getting all the different growls and things he used to get. So, he decided to go back and kind of revisit things, maybe swallow some glass and go for it. [Laughs] He’s been doing great.”
This album marks the band’s fourth major release since Leach’s comeback. It also follows ‘Songs Of Loss And Separation,’ an album from Times Of Grace, a side project by Leach and Dutkiewicz.
