Killswitch Engage frontman Jesse Leach recently spoke out against toxic masculinity and emphasized the importance of emotional openness among men in an interview with American Music Supply.

The vocalist discussed how his band creates a supportive environment and challenged traditional masculine stereotypes about emotional expression.

“I am proud to say that our band and our crew like we’re family,” Leach said. “So yeah, people know when I’m off and either they leave me alone for a little bit or somebody will tap me and say, ‘Hey bud, are you okay? You need to talk?'”

He reflected on generational attitudes toward masculinity and their lasting impact.

“If you were raised in the ’70s and ’80s, there’s that whole ‘suck it up, man up’ idea,” he continued. “So that’s still deep rooted in my psyche like, ‘Be a man.’ It’s so dumb. There’s more strength in honesty than running from someone.”

Leach concluded by outlining what he believes defines true masculinity in modern times.

“It is hard to be honest,” he said. “And I feel like that’s the ultimate goal as a man is to be honest, to be present, and to communicate. Those are things all men struggle with. I know that for sure.”

Leach’s advocacy for emotional openness stems from his own personal struggles and experiences throughout his career with Killswitch Engage.

Previous interviews revealed that Leach has been open about his battles with depression and anxiety. These struggles have significantly influenced both his songwriting and his connection with fans. His willingness to discuss mental health challenges publicly has made him a voice for emotional authenticity in the heavy metal community.

The vocalist’s current perspective is also reflected in Killswitch Engage’s upcoming musical direction. Loudwire reported that Leach is working on emotional themes for the band’s upcoming album “This Consequence,” set to release on February 21. The album explores themes of anger, fear, and hope. It reflects his evolving perspective as both a person and an artist.

Leach’s approach to masculinity and emotional expression continues to evolve as he matures as an artist. Blabbermouth noted that he has expressed his commitment to personal growth and human evolution. He stated his belief in the importance of continuing to develop as both a musician and individual.

This stance on emotional vulnerability represents a broader shift in how metal musicians approach mental health discussions. Leach serves as an example of how artists can use their platform to challenge traditional masculine stereotypes while maintaining their authenticity within the heavy music scene.
