Jerry Cantrell’s Contribution To Keanu Reeves’ ‘John Wick’

Jerry Cantrell, best known as the co-founder and the lead guitarist of Alice in Chains, has contributed to the band since the beginning of its appearance on the rock scene. Cantrell announced its name to the whole world, especially when the band gained recognition with the rise of grunge in the early ’90s. His remarkable singing and the harmonized vocals between him and Layne Staley brought the band to a notable place in the music scene.

Besides being a member of Alice in Chains, Cantrell has also focused on his solo career for years. He debuted with ‘Boggy Depot’ in 1998, which spent several weeks on the US Billboard 200. The guitarist collaborated with other significant musicians like Ozzy Osbourne, Pantera, Stone Temple Pilots, and Damageplan. Cantrell has also created a few movie soundtracks. He wrote a song, ‘Ashes To Ashes,’ with Damageplan for the 2004 movie ‘The Punisher.’ Later on, Cantrell contributed to Keanu Reeves’ movie ‘John Wick: Chapter 2’ in 2017.

Jerry Cantrell Composed A Soundtrack For John Wick

‘John Wick: Chapter 2,’ directed by Chad Stahelski and written by Derek Kolstad, was released in 2017, three years after the first movie. Besides Keanu Reeves as the main character, the cast includes names like Laurence Fishburne and Ian McShane. The film generally received positive reactions from critics. They praised the actors’ performances, especially Keanu Reeves, action scenes, and soundtracks.

Jerry Cantrell became a part of this movie by contributing to its soundtrack. The rocker wrote the song ‘A Job to Do‘ for ‘John Wick: Chapter 2.’ Cantrell worked with Tyler Bates, who is known as a film composer, in this song. The musician expressed his admiration for Keanu Reeves’ works and indicated that he examined ‘John Wick’ to create good music for the second movie during past interviews. He mentioned that he was excited to hear ‘A Job to Do’ in the film.

Cantrell said in his words:

“I really dug ‘John Wick’ and have always admired Keanu’s work. When the opportunity arose to create a song for the second film, Tyler Bates and I wrote and recorded ‘A Job To Do,’ a theme song for the character. I can’t wait to see it!”

In a 2017 interview with Billboard, Jerry Cantrell stated that the process of creating the piece was entertaining, and he saw it as a task. The musician also added that he wrote the song from John Wick’s point of view.

About the song, the musician explained:

“It was a kind of fun. It almost felt like an assignment that I gave to myself. It’s not unlike how I normally write from a personal point of view, whether mine or someone else’s.”
