Jasen Rauch On Revisiting A Song He Wrote With Starset’s Dustin Bates

In 2022, Breaking Benjamin and Starset revisited an old gem, ‘Waiting On The Sky To Change.’ This song wasn’t new, however, as it was penned by Jasen Rauch and Dustin Bates over a decade ago. In a recent radio chat with 97.9 WGRD, Rauch opened up about how it felt to unearth and breathe new life into this song from their past.

Diving into the nostalgia, Rauch shared that the song was originally crafted 11 years ago, way before Starset was even conceptualized. He and Dustin were no strangers to creating music together, having teamed up for numerous projects over the years. However, ‘Waiting On The Sky To Change’ carries a special significance for Jasen Rauch. Seeing this song resurface and resonate with audiences today, even after all these years, brings him a sense of joy and fulfillment.

Here is what Jasen Rauch said about re-recording ‘Waiting On The Sky To Change’:

“It was wild. Dustin and I did that song together 11 years ago, even before Starset was a thing. For that song to come back was not only a surprise but also pretty honoring. Dustin and I had done a decent amount of work together, even on other projects, because he writes a lot. Yeah, it was really rewarding. To know that you wrote something back then, it stood the test of time, and it’s still a good song now is always a good feeling. So, proud of that one for sure.”

Before Dustin Bates found his footing with Starset, he was part of another band named Downplay. This was where ‘Waiting On The Sky To Change’ was born. But as Bates shifted his focus to Starset, Downplay was put on the back burner. It wasn’t until October 2022 that the duo decided to dust off this old track, re-record it, and release it as a collaborative piece. After its release, the song made a grand entrance on multiple Billboard charts, making it a fruitful endeavor for both Rauch and Bates.
