Papa Roach frontman Jacoby Shaddix recently opened up about the band’s new song “Wake Up Calling.” He shared the deeply personal and spiritual meaning behind his lyrics in a statement posted on Instagram.
The discussion centered around the multifaceted inspiration for the track. The song draws from his marriage, faith, and relationships with his bandmates. When asked “What does ‘Wake Up Calling’ mean to you?”, Shaddix provided an extensive explanation of the song’s significance.
“The relationship I’ve got with my wife was the beginning of this, the story, you know. And it has different prongs. The song has different elements to me. It’s a spiritual song. It’s a call out to God,” Shaddix said.
He continued to elaborate on his wife’s unwavering support throughout his personal struggles.
“It also me just recognizing like how much of a rock my wife has been to me throughout the years and how she loved me through my struggles and seen something of value in me. Even at moments when I didn’t see value in myself. I’ve been on the brink of disaster a few times in my life and she has been that person that’s like pulled me back from the edge,” he explained.
The frontman also acknowledged the role his bandmates have played in his journey.
“Also my brothers in the band. You guys have been a rock to me, you know, and been there for me and understanding and compassionate of me shooting myself in the my foot. Or me being my own worst enemy,” Shaddix noted.
He then touched on the spiritual dimension of the song. He reflected on his 12-year faith journey.
“And then the spiritual element, this spiritual walk that I’ve been on for the last 12 years and the way that it’s evolved for me, you know, and my call out to God and keep turning my will and my low life over to a power greater than myself has really afforded me some huge revelations in my life to really become the man that my wife deserves, to become the front man that the fans deserve to be the person that looks back at me at myself in the mirror. Like, all those elements,” he said.
Shaddix concluded by describing the song as a story of personal transformation.
“This, like, this story of becoming whole. Through my own tribulations, you know. So it’s a deep one, man. And, I just love that this music, this music that the band writes gives me this platform to just get real. And to just tear away all the front and just be raw,” he stated.
The deeply personal track has resonated strongly with both fans and industry professionals. It marks another significant milestone in Papa Roach’s ongoing career resurgence.
“Wake Up Calling” was released as a single in January 2026. It has already achieved remarkable commercial success. Blabbermouth reported that the song hit #1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Airplay chart. The track became Papa Roach’s 13th number-one hit and their sixth consecutive chart-topper in this category. This achievement ties them with notable bands like Disturbed and Linkin Park in terms of mainstream rock radio dominance.
The track was produced by Colin Brittain. He is known for his work with major acts including Linkin Park and other prominent rock bands. 98 Rock noted that the song is expected to appear on Papa Roach’s upcoming new album. The album is scheduled for release later in 2026. The single also reached the top 25 on Billboard Alternative Airplay, demonstrating its crossover appeal beyond traditional rock radio formats.
The official music video for “Wake Up Calling” premiered on March 19, 2026. Hannah Gray Hall directed the video. KSAN-FM described how the video features the band performing in a dilapidated house. The video is interspersed with compelling visual narratives including scenes of a tattooed man digging a hole, an older man caring for a raven, and a woman dancing in a club. These symbolic elements complement the song’s themes of redemption and choosing love over self-destruction.
This latest success follows Papa Roach’s impressive 2025 performance. The year included other chart-topping singles like “Even If It Kills Me” and “Braindead” featuring Toby Morse. The band’s “Rise Of The Roach” tour reached over 1 million fans. This demonstrated their continued relevance and drawing power in the rock music landscape. The combination of commercial success and deeply personal songwriting continues to solidify Papa Roach’s position as one of rock’s most enduring and authentic voices.
