Kyle Gass has officially confirmed that Tenacious D will be making a comeback. He revealed that he and Jack Black have reconciled following the controversy that put the band on hiatus. The guitarist opened up about their relationship and future plans in a recent interview with Rolling Stone.

Gass addressed the onstage joke that caused the band’s temporary break and took full responsibility for his actions.

“I’m human, I made a mistake. I was going for a joke. But timing is everything. If there was ever a ‘too soon,’ it was this. It was terrible. It was a terrible judgment, obviously. I’ve felt terrible ever since, because it’s such a responsibility to not screw up like that,” Gass said.

He explained how the situation escalated beyond what they initially anticipated.

“We were discussing what we were going to do [with the band]. I think we were considering taking a show off and getting back out there. I thought I could apologize onstage, like, ‘Hey, I wasn’t thinking straight.’ But at that point there were safety concerns. And once you get into that, it just doesn’t matter,” he continued.

Gass expressed understanding for Black’s position during the controversy.

“Jack was doing what he felt he had to do. We’re separate people, always, and we’re on different career paths. I totally understood what he needed to protect. I didn’t begrudge him any of that,” he said. “I might have deserved it. He had to protect himself from his loose cannon partner over here. I totally understood once safety concerns got in. We hashed it out. And it was hard. It is like a marriage. You go through these ups and downs, and try to understand your partner.”

The guitarist concluded with an enthusiastic promise about the band’s return.

“We’re gonna come back — it’s gonna be bigger than Oasis! We will be back. We will return,” Gass declared.

The controversy that led to Tenacious D’s hiatus began during what should have been a routine concert performance. It quickly escalated into a career-defining moment for both musicians.

The incident occurred during a concert in Sydney, Australia, just one day after an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump in July 2024. Ranker reported that the timing of Gass’s controversial joke created an immediate backlash that forced the band to confront serious safety concerns and public scrutiny. The comment prompted Black to take swift action, immediately canceling the remaining tour dates and placing all future creative plans on indefinite hold.

Black’s response was both decisive and protective of the band’s reputation. The A.V. Club documented that Black stated, “After much reflection, I no longer feel it is appropriate to continue to Tenacious D tour, and all future creative plans are on hold. I am grateful to the fans for their support and understanding.” This statement marked the beginning of what many fans feared could be the permanent end of the comedy rock duo.

Despite the public hiatus, the band has quietly begun returning to musical activity. Ranker confirmed that Tenacious D contributed a cover of REO Speedwagon’s “Keep on Loving You” to a Los Angeles wildfire relief album in 2025. This marked their first collaborative work since the controversy. This subtle return to music suggested that the partnership between Black and Gass was slowly healing behind the scenes.

The comedy rock duo has been entertaining audiences since their formation in Los Angeles in 1994. It has weathered various challenges throughout their three-decade career. Wikipedia notes that Tenacious D has built a devoted fanbase through their unique blend of comedy and rock music. This makes their recent reconciliation particularly significant for longtime supporters who have followed their journey from small club performances to Grammy Award recognition.
