Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy shared an emotional message to fans after the band’s 40th Anniversary World Tour concluded. He announced that the band will take a break from touring, as reported on Instagram.

The statement reflected on the massive scale and success of their recent world tour. It expressed gratitude to fans and crew members.

“Well, that’s a wrap on Dream Theater’s 40th Anniversary World Tour!! Over a year and a half on the road…October 20th 2024 to May 12th 2026: 159 Shows in 45 Countries!” Portnoy said. “Thank you to everybody that came out to the shows making it DT’s biggest and most successful tour ever! We felt the love and emotions from all of you each and every night.”

Portnoy also acknowledged the hard work of the touring crew. He outlined the band’s upcoming plans.

“And huge thanks to our incredible crew who were with us for this amazing journey…making every show happen even under sometimes very difficult conditions and circumstances,” he continued. “It’s always sad saying goodbye to our tour family, but we are certainly all excited to finally get a break and get back to our families back HOME!!”

The drummer confirmed that Dream Theater will return to the studio later this year to work on new material.

“We will take the summer off (although I do have about a months worth of shows w NMB in Aug/Sept) and then DT will reconvene in the studio in the fall to start work on another album and then we can start the whole thing all over again!” he concluded.

Portnoy’s announcement marks the end of what has been a monumental chapter for the progressive metal legends. The band has been celebrating four decades since their formation in 1985.

The 40th Anniversary World Tour represents a significant milestone for Dream Theater. This is particularly notable given Portnoy’s dramatic return to the band after a 13-year absence. The drummer originally left the group in 2010 and rejoined in 2023. This made the tour a highly anticipated reunion for longtime fans. The tour’s impressive statistics underscore its success. The band sold approximately 500,000 tickets globally and grossed over $25 million, industry estimates revealed.

The tour’s setlist evolution has been particularly noteworthy. It featured a comprehensive journey through Dream Theater’s 15-studio album catalog with an emphasis on deep cuts to honor the anniversary theme. Each show averaged 2.5 to 3 hours in length. Portnoy delivered extended drum solos that incorporated 40th-anniversary medleys featuring snippets from classic tracks like “The Dance of Eternity.” The tour achieved sold-out status for 70% of its dates. This included prestigious venues like Madison Square Garden and Wembley Arena.

During the tour’s run, Dream Theater also released their latest album “Parasomnia” in March 2026. The release marks Portnoy’s 10th album with the band and their 16th overall. The album was recorded between July and December 2025 at The Barn in New York and Fascination Street Studios in Sweden. Production was handled by John Petrucci and James Lacombe. The release achieved significant commercial success. It reached number one on the Billboard Prog Albums chart and earned a 92/100 score on Metacritic.

Portnoy’s contribution to the new album was substantial. The drummer contributed lyrics to four tracks—his most significant lyrical involvement since 2009’s “Black Clouds & Silver Linings.” The recording process was intensive. Portnoy laid down over 200 drum takes across 150+ hours of tracked material. At 58 years old, Portnoy has maintained remarkable endurance throughout the demanding tour schedule. He credits his plant-based diet and cryotherapy regimen for sustaining the energy required for three-hour performances night after night.
