Bruce Dickinson and Steve Harris of Iron Maiden have offered contrasting views on the band’s future recording plans.
The exchange came in response to a direct question about whether the band has any plans to begin work on a new album. The two members’ answers revealed a clear difference of opinion on the matter.
When asked about new album plans, Dickinson was straightforward about his enthusiasm.
“Would I like to do a new Iron Maiden album now? Yes. Would I like to do one starting next year? Yes. So over to you, Steve,” Dickinson said.
Harris pushed back on the framing and clarified his own position.
“No. We haven’t had a band discussion about it yet. I know Bruce wants to do one. He said in an interview that I didn’t want to do one, which is not true,” Harris said.
Harris went on to explain his more measured stance, noting that live performances remain the current priority.
“When he told me about it, I just said, ‘Yeah, maybe, we’ll see.’ At the moment it’s more important that we focus on playing live. Plus, Bruce is doing stuff with his solo project next year, so we’ll see,” he continued.
The comments suggest that while a new Iron Maiden album is not off the table, no formal discussions have taken place within the band yet.
The back-and-forth between Dickinson and Harris reflects a broader tension that often surfaces in long-running bands: the pull between creative momentum and the practical demands of life on the road. For Iron Maiden, both forces are very much in play right now.
The band’s most recent studio album, Senjutsu, was released in September 2021. A sprawling, 81-minute double album, it debuted at number one in multiple countries, including the UK. It was widely praised as one of the band’s most ambitious records in decades. It remains their latest studio statement, meaning any new album would arrive more than five years after its predecessor — a significant gap even by Maiden’s standards.
Dickinson’s eagerness to get back into the studio is not entirely surprising given his parallel creative life outside the band. He released his most recent solo album, The Mandrake Project, in February 2024 — his first solo record in over two decades. The album was accompanied by an extensive solo tour. Dickinson has spoken openly about the creative energy the project reignited in him, energy he appears ready to channel back into Iron Maiden.
Harris’s focus on live performance is equally grounded in reality. Iron Maiden has been one of the most active touring bands of their generation and has continued to headline major festivals well into the 2020s. For Harris, the stage has always been the band’s primary arena. He has historically been cautious about rushing into the studio without the right material in place.
The disagreement, if it can be called that, is less a crisis than a familiar dynamic within a band that has operated for over five decades. Iron Maiden has navigated lineup changes, health scares, and shifting musical landscapes, and has consistently emerged with their legacy intact. Whether a new album arrives in 2026 or later, the conversation has at least begun — even if only in public.
