Interpol‘s drummer Sam Fogarino recently did an interview with NME about the soundtrack of his life, and for the track that makes him cry, his pick was none other than Sinead O’Connor‘s cover of ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ that perfectly reflects what it is to lose a lover.

Although O’Connor didn’t write the track, the way she sings gives goosebumps to Fogarino as she encompasses the heaviness that comes with the deep loss of someone you cared about to perfection, so much so that the drummer couldn’t listen to it when he was going through a breakup.

He also gave a shout-out to O’Connor’s ‘I Want Your (Hands On Me),’ which he described as a compelling expression of emotions where passion and lust are at the forefront. These tracks were all made before Sinead changed her lifestyle, but they still hold their ground as powerful tracks.

Sam Foragino’s words about the song that makes him cry read:

“I mean, who hasn’t felt that heavy weight of losing your lover? The video she made for this track, being so stark and in-your-face, used to make me choke up. And if I was ever going through a breakup, I actually couldn’t deal with it. She didn’t write this song, but thinking about how she sings it gives me goosebumps. I also get goosebumps when I hear her track ‘I Want Your (Hands On Me)’ because it’s another really powerful expression of emotion.”

Although the singer no longer identifies with her previous life as she has converted to Islam and has chosen to wear the hijab, and has taken multiple steps back from her music career, Sam still has a to of love for the tracks from her career that have profoundly impacted him emotionally.
