Gordon Lightfoot, the Canadian folk musician who entered the American pop scene during the ’70s, passed away due to natural causes on May 1. The 84-year-old died at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto, as confirmed by his long-serving agent, Victoria Lord. Lightfoot’s health had been a subject of concern for many years, with a serious illness in 2002 leading to an extended hospital stay.
In the wake of his passing, tributes from fellow musicians poured in. Canadian rocker Bryan Adams expressed his profound grief, stating that he was deeply saddened by the loss of his friend Gordon. Adams spoke of the privilege of working and spending time with someone he admired since his youth. He shared his belief that Lightfoot’s departure leaves the world poorer and thanked the late artist on behalf of all Canadians for his musical contributions.
Sebastian Bach, former frontman of Skid Row, shared his sorrow as well, reminiscing about a memorable interaction with Lightfoot on Twitter. Bach conveyed his condolences to Lightfoot’s family and friends and expressed his gratitude for the timeless music that the late musician left behind.
Bryan Adam’s tweet read:
“This one is really hard to write. Once in a blue moon, you get to work and hang out with one of the people you admired when you were growing up. I was lucky enough to say Gordon was my friend, and I’m gutted to know he’s gone. The world is a lesser place without him. I know I speak for all Canadians when I say: thank you for the songs, Gordon Lightfoot. Bless your sweet songwriting heart; RIP, dear friend.”
Bach’s tribute to Lightfoot:
“Rest in peace, Gordon Lightfoot. One of my greatest moments on Twitter was when I realized that you were following me. My condolences to your family and friends, and my thanks to the incredible music that you made that will last forever.”
In 2002, at the age of 63, Lightfoot faced a health crisis. Suffering from severe abdominal pain before a concert in his hometown of Orillia, Ontario, he underwent emergency surgery due to a ruptured aorta. After weeks in the hospital and multiple surgeries, he made a return to the recording studio and live performances.
Gordon Lightfoot, known for his touching lyrics and melodic compositions, was the recipient of 17 Juno awards and was nominated for five Grammy awards throughout his career. Lightfoot’s works have been covered by a diverse range of artists, from Bob Dylan and Elvis Presley to Judy Collins, Barbra Streisand, Glen Campbell, and Richie Havens. May he rest in peace.
