Godsmack drummer Shannon Larkin shared a story about his earlier days in the band and reminisced about his ignorant times. Appearing in a new interview with Heavy Consequence, the rocker recalled his early days by mentioning major labels, gold and platinum records and money. He reflected on the moment he realized he had ‘made it’ in the band:

“My story would take forever to tell, but I went through a lot of bands on major labels even, and by the time Sully [Erna] called me and gave me this gift of Godsmack, I had already written off rock and roll as something I’d be successful at. I had already completed what I felt was success by that point. I just never really attained any kind of business success as far as selling records, playing these huge concerts, being in a band that sells…”

The drummer continued by expressing his feelings about getting a gold record for the first time:

“I got a gold record. In fact, I wasn’t gonna get a gold record because our, our first record with me was ‘Faceless.’ It was our first No. 1. And it came out and sold 250,000 copies in like a week. And so I went to Sully and I said, ‘Oh my God. I’m gonna get my first gold record.'”

Apparently, Sully did not seem to be happy with the gold record, and in fact, he wanted more:

“And he said, ‘No, you’re not gonna get a gold record. It’s going platinum. And these things cost money. So we’ll just get platinum.’ And I said, ‘Well, no. I want a gold record.’ And he said, ‘Well, no. Platinum is better. It’s more. It’s a million.’ And I said, ‘Yeah, but the old-school [way of doing is to have] an office [with] gold records on the wall and all that.’ And he said, ‘Well, it’s just not the way the business works.’ And I said, ‘Oh, okay, I guess.'”

Godsmack’s Gold And Platinum Record History

Although they had some hard times to get any platinum and gold records, Godsmack secured platinum with their self titled second studio album. The band’s next two albums too were a big success and ultimately reached platinum. But what Sully Erna wanted in the first place for their next two albums, ‘IV,’ and ‘The Oracle’ did not happen since they only stuck to gold rather than platinum. Still, the band got their latest platinum with their 2018 single ‘Bulletproof’ from the album ‘When Legends Rise.’

The Most Recent Album is The Last Godsmack Album

While Godsmack thinks that their latest album ‘Lighting Up the Sky’ is their best album so far, they are also sure that this is going to be their last album as a band together. In the same interview, Erna stated that he is not sure what the future holds for them while making sure that the latest album is what they feel is to be their ‘last body of work.’
