In a recent chat with Scott Lipps, Brent Smith picked Fred Durst and Lzzy Hale as underrated rock singers.
“I think Johnny Stevens from Highly Suspect is underrated,” the Shinedown vocalist said when asked about his top five criminally underrated singers. Lipps added after him, “Great band.”
Smith continued with his fourth choice, “Chris Robinson from the Black Crowes. Which is it, Robinson? I’ve always thought he was criminally underrated.” Lipps also said, “I think he’s one of the greatest singers ever. One of my faves.”
“Yeah cause sometimes people are like, ‘You know he has like one thing that he does’ and I’m like ‘Yeah, man but he does it really really well.’ Lzzy Hale. Super powerful voice but she’s not just a belter. When she sings soft, I’ve always kind of felt like she was a little underrated just in regards to and she’s also like the most wicked guitar player,” the singer revealed his third pick.
Brent further shared about underrated rocker, “Fred Durst.” Lipps stepped in to say, “Yeah, it might be controversial.” Smith agreed, explaining, “It’ll be controversial. People are like, ‘What?’ There’s a unique thing and I always go back to ‘Behind Blue Eyes’ when he did that. That was like the glimpse of like, ‘Wait a minute, hang on a second.'”
“Scott Stapp. A thousand percent,” the rocker disclosed his number one choice. “I think it’s their time. There’s an element of nostalgia in there that I think is really important. These younger generations, these kids don’t know who Limp Bizkit was back in like the early 2000s or Creed was in the ’90s or what have you. So like all of a sudden this like brand new to them.”
Last month, Shinedown announced their ‘Dance, Kid, Dance’ tour starting April 25 in Des Moines, Iowa. The tour will visit over 30 cities, including Nashville and New York, before ending in Memphis on August 30. Beartooth will join them for the spring dates, Bush for the summer dates, and Morgan Wade will open all shows.
