Glenn Hughes Names The Guitarist Superior To Ritchie Blackmore

In a recent interview with Rockin’ Metal Revival, Glenn Hughes revealed his favorite guitarist, who he admired more than Ritchie Blackmore.

Having played alongside numerous guitarists throughout his career, Hughes singled out one as the most exceptional guitarist he had ever collaborated with:

“I wanna go on record now. I’m going to list a few for you. I played with Satriani, Bonamassa, Iommi, Blackmore, Pat Thrall, Brian May, Jerry Cantrell, and Warren Haynes. I could go on and list them. And Mel Galley and Tommy Bolin. I mean, I could carry on. But my favorite… I really want you to push this one. My dearest old friend — we started working together in 1979; Gary Moore was the best.”

Hughes then reflected on the depth of his relationship with Moore and recollected their moments together:

“Now, people, understand me now; Gary and I were very close. We made the album ‘Run For Cover.’ When I look back at Gary, and I look back at Gary and I working together and him playing in my studio and sitting in my home on the couch writing songs, that guy was un-be-lie-va-ble. I mean, un-be-lie-va-ble. Again, all those people I spoke about are iconic guitar players. I mean, I’ve played with them all, and I’m very proud to say. Bonamassa right now is… I mean, Joe’s incredible. And Ritchie and Tony. But Gary Moore…”

This is not the first time Hughes has lauded Moore’s talent. It’s worth noting that he held the same sentiment in a 2019 interview with Rock Candy magazine. He compared Moore favorably to other guitar greats like Vai and May, indicating that Moore’s skill and artistry made a lasting impact on him.

Moore’s impact wasn’t limited to Hughes alone. Other artists in the music industry have expressed their admiration for Moore. In July 2023, former Alice Cooper guitarist Orianthi mentioned Moore as an influence on her sound, particularly noting his role in pioneering ‘blues metal.’

For an interesting note, Metallica’s Kirk Hammett purchased Moore’s famed ‘Greeny’ guitar in 2014 for around $1 million. You can read that story here.

Moore passed away on February 6, 2011, after he reportedly suffered a heart attack. Hughes, on the other hand, is currently on the road for a tour. Grab your tickets here.
