Glenn Hughes has addressed speculation about his relationship with Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi. He clarified their friendship status in a recent interview with BraveWords.
The Deep Purple bassist emphasized that there has never been any conflict between him and Iommi. He described their long-standing friendship.
“And I’ll always tell it, and you probably heard it too,” Hughes said. “But, we never had a falling out. With Tony Iommi, one of my closest friends, I met him in 1970 when Sabbath had the big hit. I was playing in Trapeze, and I know all those guys.”
Hughes continued to highlight the strength of their personal and professional relationship.
“So for me, to know and work with Tony is like being with my closest friend,” he continued. “We are very good with each other, and that’s great.”
The friendship between Hughes and Iommi extends far beyond personal bonds. It has resulted in several significant musical collaborations throughout their careers.
Glenn Hughes’ official website revealed that their enduring collaboration produced the album Fused in 2005. Both artists reunited to create a powerhouse rock record that showcased their musical chemistry. The project demonstrated their ability to blend Hughes’ powerful vocals with Iommi’s signature guitar work.
Their professional relationship dates back even further. Loudwire reported that Hughes temporarily took on vocal duties for Black Sabbath on the Seventh Star album in the mid-1980s. The album was originally intended as a solo Iommi project. This collaboration marked an important chapter in both musicians’ careers during a transitional period for Black Sabbath.
Most recently, AXS TV noted that the pair collaborated with pop star Robbie Williams on the track “Rocket.” They blended their signature rock styles with Williams’ pop sensibilities for a fresh, adrenaline-fueled sound. This unexpected collaboration shows their willingness to explore new musical territories together.
The comments put to rest any rumors about tension between the two rock legends who have maintained their friendship for over five decades. Their ongoing creative partnership continues to evolve. This proves that their bond remains as strong as ever both personally and professionally.
