Way explained that the band wants to focus on making music first, and that vague statements sometimes come down to protecting people involved. He also addressed fan theories about hidden meanings in the band’s announcements.

“You know, sometimes shit will sound, like, _intentionally_ vague, when really it’s just to protect everybody’s feelings involved,” Way said. “So, yeah. Next year, we wanna go make a record.”

The frontman then outlined the band’s timeline for the coming years. “We’re probably not doing any shows [in 2027]. There’s no secret code to that. I mean, maybe if we get really rusty when we’re making something, we’re like, ‘Alright, let’s call the band ‘Helena’ or something and show up'” he continued. “But, you know, seriously. We want to go do that and then hopefully, we’ll see you guys in 2028.”

Way also pushed back against the tendency of fans to read deeper meaning into the band’s choices and words. “You know, ’cause that’s some other shit I just wanna get out of the way, man! Let’s have fun. You deserve to have fun! You don’t wanna be stressed out, thinking, like, ‘Oh, what does this number on his box mean?’ We actually don’t really do that shit. Do you know how much of that shit is coincidence?”

Way made these comments while discussing My Chemical Romance’s plans for the next few years. The remarks show the band’s desire to prioritize the creative process over touring and public performance.

My Chemical Romance’s last studio album came out in November 2010. The band broke up in March 2013 but reunited in October 2019, with a reunion tour that ran from May 2022 to March 2023. Gerard Way said at a concert in San Antonio that the band has wanted to make another record for a long time, and they now plan to do so in 2027.

The band released new material with the track “The Foundations of Decay” in 2022. In 2025, My Chemical Romance toured to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their album The Black Parade. The Black Parade 2026 tour concluded with three nights at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles in October 2026.

With the touring done, the band can now shift focus to the studio work Way described. The recording session in 2027 will mark their first new album since 2010, more than 16 years after their previous release. After recording, Way said fans can expect to see the band perform again in 2028.
