Sammy Hagar‘s son Andrew recently spoke to Metal Edge and opened up about David Lee Roth‘s reaction after learning that he was Sammy’s son.
The musician recalled their encounter:
“And David Lee Roth is a great frontman. We had an encounter on the Sammy and Dave tour that made me think, ‘Oh, maybe personally, I don’t really care for this guy.’ He wasn’t the nicest guy on earth to me once he found out that I was Sammy’s kid. But that’s okay. That’s not saying anything about me.”
Elsewhere in the same interview, Andrew also detailed the DLR fans’ attitude towards him as a kid and now:
“My dad always taught me how to stand up to bullies, but I definitely was harassed by some kids who were more David Lee Roth fans. And then, when the band broke up with my dad in it, then they were coming back around. I don’t know; it’s just a weird thing. I still, to this day, because of the Van Halen breakup, get people in my DMs that are chastising or criticizing me for being the son of Sammy Hagar.”
The singer reflected on the media portrayal of the Van Halen breakup, too:
“They know nothing about me other than that I’m just his kid, and they hate me because of what he did to Van Halen or the way that the media portrayed the breakup. I mean, there are still so many people out there that will never be able to tell you whether he was kicked out or left the band. And depending on what media outlet you’re reading, it falls on either side of that.”
This recent statement came right after his words about the same issue in an interview with Chuck Shute last month. Andrew shared his experience of receiving lots of ‘crazy messages‘ every day on his social media. It got so bad that he had to block many of those people.
