The 2023 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame fan vote results have been announced, with the late George Michael emerging as the winner, ahead of rock heavyweights like Iron Maiden and Soundgarden. The unexpected outcome has certainly piqued the interest of music enthusiasts.

Interestingly, George Michael won the fan vote for the Rock Hall, leaving behind bands like Iron Maiden and Soundgarden that are more commonly associated with the rock genre. Michael got a total of 1,040,072 fan votes, which is more than Maiden and Soundgarden’s summed total of 876,722.

In addition to George Michael, the fan vote list included Cyndi Lauper and Warren Zevon in second and third place. Rock Hall CEO Greg Harris expressed his excitement about the variety of artists nominated, stating that the selections challenge what we think of as rock ‘n’ roll and emphasize rock is more than just one sound but rather an attitude and a spirit.

Greg Harris said the following about 2023’s Rock Hall nominations:

“It’s just a great group. It underscores the diversity of what we think of as rock ’n’ roll — and really it’s not just one sound, it’s many sounds – it’s an attitude and a spirit.

The 2023 Rock Hall fan vote results clearly display the ever-evolving landscape of rock music and its inclusion of diverse artists. Besides, George Michael’s victory over more traditional rock acts reflects the eclectic tastes of today’s music fans. However, it’s important to recall that Rock Hall has been criticized for not being a ‘Rock and Roll’ Hall of Fame anymore.
