Genesis’ Phil Collins admitted that he is not ‘hungry for music’ anymore.
In a new interview with Mojo, he admitted that while he sometimes thinks about heading to his studio, he’s no longer motivated to create. “I keep thinking I should go downstairs to the studio and see what happens. But I’m not hungry for it anymore.”
Collins also explained that his health has prevented him from returning to music. “The thing is, I’ve been sick, I mean very sick,” he shared.
The drummer’s health problems greatly impacted his music career. In 2007, he underwent spinal surgery, in 2014, a nerve issue left him unable to play drums, and in 2017, a fall at home caused multiple surgeries and reduced his mobility.
These difficulties have made it hard for him to play drums. In a 2021 interview, he shared, “I can hardly hold a drumstick with this hand, so there are certain physical things which get in the way.” As a result, Collins retired from drumming in March 2022, calling the change ‘a shock.’
During Genesis’ 2022 ‘The Last Domino’ farewell tour, Collins performed seated, with his son Nic taking over on drums. It’s been over 20 years since Collins released new music, with his last solo album, ‘Testify,’ coming out in 2002. His most recent release was a Motown covers album, ‘Going Back,’ in 2010.
