Exodus guitarist Gary Holt recently addressed criticism from rock fans regarding Sleep Token’s commercial success. He defended the band’s ability to sell out major venues in comments made to SKC Novi Sad.
Holt’s remarks focused on the contradictory nature of fan complaints about both the lack of new successful rock bands and their criticism when newer acts achieve mainstream success.
“We’re lucky that we started out at an era before downloading and all that — when tape trading was big,” Holt said. “We had fans around the world before we had ever done an album. So, we’re lucky like that. It’s harder now for young bands.”
The guitarist then highlighted the inconsistency in fan attitudes toward emerging bands.
“But all the old bands are still selling out the huge venues, and people will complain that there’s no young band selling out venues and arenas,” he continued. “And then Sleep Token becomes huge, and people complain about Sleep Token selling out arenas. Isn’t that what we want? We want newer bands to take the place and become headliners.”
Holt expressed his personal support for Sleep Token’s success.
“I’m a fan. I like Sleep Token and I’m happy to see them do well,” he said. “Because people complain when ‘There’s no new band selling arenas out.’ And then a new one comes out, and, like, ‘I don’t want that one to do it. I don’t like them.’ But that’s what we want and people are cranky and they complain when it happens.”
Holt’s perspective on the music industry comes from decades of experience in the thrash metal scene. He has witnessed firsthand the evolution of how bands build their fanbase and achieve commercial success.
Guitar World reported that Holt has been instrumental in shaping the thrash metal landscape through his work with Exodus and his contributions to Slayer’s touring lineup. His experience spans multiple generations of metal music. This gives him unique insight into the challenges facing contemporary bands compared to those who emerged in the 1980s and 1990s.
The guitarist’s career trajectory demonstrates the evolution of the music industry itself. The Vinyl District noted that Holt has been a driving force behind Exodus since the band’s formation. He later contributed significantly to Slayer’s 2015 album “Repentless.” His dual role in both bands has provided him with extensive touring experience and exposure to different fan demographics across generations.
Holt’s financial success in the industry further underscores his credibility when discussing the business aspects of modern music. Mabumbe estimated his net worth at $8 million. This wealth largely stems from extensive touring and a successful music career spanning several decades. This financial stability allows him to speak candidly about industry trends without personal financial pressures influencing his opinions.
His support for Sleep Token reflects a broader understanding of how the metal and rock scenes must evolve to remain relevant. The guitarist’s comments highlight the importance of veteran musicians embracing newer acts rather than dismissing them. He recognizes that the genre’s future depends on successful transitions between generations of performers.
