Pattie Boyd, George Harrison and Eric Clapton’s ex-wife, opened up about the challenges of dealing with women pursuing her husband, in a candid conversation featured on the Miss O’Dell: Abbey Road to Tulsa Time Podcast.

Boyd reflected on how difficult it was to handle the constant attention other women showed toward Clapton, recalling one particular incident in Australia where she took matters into her own hands.

“It was very difficult. Very difficult to deal with [to deal with girls hitting on my husband]. In a nice-ish way, you know….” Boyd said. “I remember once somebody was chatting up Eric [Clapton] and I was so furious, I threw a vodka and tonic at her all over her.”

The incident, she noted, took place at a time when news did not spread as quickly as it does today.

“This was in Australia. News didn’t travel then, obviously…” she continued. “She was coming onto Eric, and it was just really pissing me off.”

Boyd’s remarks shed light on the personal pressures she faced during her marriage to Clapton, offering a rare and candid glimpse into life behind the scenes of rock royalty.

Her story, however, did not begin with Clapton. Boyd’s life had long been intertwined with some of rock’s most iconic figures, and the pressures she described were rooted in a decades-long journey through one of music history’s most famous love triangles.

Boyd first married George Harrison in 1966, after the Beatles guitarist fell for her during the filming of A Hard Day’s Night, as noted by Wikipedia. The marriage placed her at the center of the rock world’s most scrutinized social circles. It ended in divorce in 1977.

It was during her marriage to Harrison that Clapton’s feelings for Boyd first became widely known. His obsession with her inspired one of rock’s most celebrated songs — “Layla” — a raw, desperate plea written at a time when Boyd was still married to Harrison. The song became a defining moment in Clapton’s career and a testament to the intensity of the love triangle that surrounded her.

Boyd and Clapton married in 1979, two years after her divorce from Harrison was finalized. The Beatles Wiki reported that the transition from one relationship to the other was far from simple. It unfolded against a backdrop of public fascination and personal turmoil that followed Boyd throughout both marriages.

Boyd has also noted that the lack of instant media coverage during her years with Clapton offered a degree of protection that would be unthinkable today. As AARP highlighted, the era before social media and round-the-clock news cycles meant that incidents — like the one she described in Australia — could remain largely private. They were shielded from the kind of viral scrutiny that would be unavoidable now.
