Eddie Vedder recently discussed Pearl Jam’s future and the band’s new drummer situation. He declined to reveal the identity of Matt Cameron’s replacement in an interview with Rolling Stone.

The Pearl Jam frontman spoke about the band’s current creative process and their excitement about upcoming changes.

“We’re in the lab, we’re woodshedding, excited,” Vedder said. “It’s cool to think of change. As much as we’d like to have done it the way we did it forever – and we’ll still be able to do that thing – I think we’re all just excited for the future.”

When pressed about announcing the new drummer’s identity, Vedder explained the band’s cautious approach to making such revelations public.

“If I were to say anything, I think we’d wanna have a band discussion about what we’d wanna say or who would be the messenger or whatever,” he said about the new drummer announcement.

The comments come as Pearl Jam continues to work with their new drummer following Matt Cameron’s departure from the band.

Vedder’s cautious approach to the drummer announcement reflects the significant transition the band is experiencing after nearly three decades with the same lineup.

Louder Sound reported that Matt Cameron announced his departure from the Seattle band on July 7, 2025. This brought to an end his 27-year tenure with original members Vedder, Stone Gossard, Mike McCready, and Jeff Ament. Cameron’s departure marks the end of an era for Pearl Jam. He had been the band’s longest-serving drummer since joining in 1998.

The drummer’s exit was marked by a heartfelt farewell message that highlighted the deep bonds formed during his time with the band. Cameron posted on social media: “Much love and respect to Jeff, Ed, Mike and Stone for inviting me into the band in 1998, and for giving me the opportunity of a lifetime, filled with friendships, artistry, challenges and laughter.”

Cameron’s departure represents a major shift for Pearl Jam. He had been instrumental in shaping the band’s sound for over two decades. His drumming style helped define some of Pearl Jam’s most memorable albums and performances. This makes the search for his replacement a crucial decision for the band’s future direction.

The band’s secretive approach to announcing their new drummer suggests they are taking considerable time to ensure the right fit. They want both musical and personal compatibility as they prepare to enter this new chapter of their career.
